Guinea Pig information about Diet, Housing and when

to call your Veterinarian if you have a problem.

Typical Dietguinea pig image

Guinea pigs should have a good diet consisting of the following:Good quality guinea pig pellets which can be purchased from most stores which sell pet foods. It is recommended to give about 1/8 cup of pellets once daily when supplemented by hay and fresh vegetables.

Fresh hay such as "Timothy hay". Guinea pigs should have an unlimited supply of fresh hay daily. This helps with their digestion as well as limiting the growth of their teeth.

Small amounts and vegetables, which should be thrown out if not eaten within 24 hours. When feeding vegetables try to look for a selection of different vegetables, especially for dark leafy vegetables or root vegetables.

Guinea pigs must have a source of vitamin C. This can be given in water (typically 250 mg/liter or quart in water).

Clean, fresh, water, which should be changed daily

Food and water should always be available to a guinea pig
Many house plants are toxic to a guinea pig, as is any grass treated with pesticides

Talk to your veterinarian for more information.

Housing

Guinea pigs acclimate well to average temperatures but do not handle extreme changes in temperature well so keep any cage or housing out of direct sunlight or very drafty areas.

The Humane Society of the United States recommendes that guinea pig cages should be the follow these guidelines:
One guinea pig: 7.5 square feet cage (minimum), but more is better; generally 30" x 36" is a good size.
Two guinea pigs: 7.5 square feet (minimum), but 10.5 square feet is preferred; generally 30" x 50" is a good size.
Three guinea pigs: 10.5 square feet (minimum), but 13 square feet is preferred; generally 30" x 62" is a good size.
Four guinea pigs: 13 square feet (minimum), but more is better; generally 30" x 76" is a good size.

Guinea pigs benefit from being near family activity and having lots of attention given to them. However, a guinea pig has very sensitive hearing so they should not have their cages next to anything loud such as a television or stereo.

Remember to clean the habitat regularly with mild soap and water (drying completely before the guinea pig is returned to the habitat) and change bedding at least weekly.
