Anesthesia

We have a modern anesthesia system with monitoring of vital functions during surgery. This is so we can provide anesthesia to your pet as accurately and safely as possible.

monitor Are you anxious about the anesthesia of your pet? We let you see how we deal with anesthesia.

Many pet owners about to submit their pet for surgery are more anxious about the anesthesia than the surgery itself. We aim to inform and ease your concerns. We are an accredited hospital that adheres to strict standards of care when providing services and treatment of your pet. With the modern resources now available in medicine it is entirely possible to achieve very safe anesthesia.

For each individual patient, we will assess:

  • Can the surgery / operation also safely be performed without any form of anesthesia or with only light anesthesia?
  • Is the breed of your pet sensitive to certain anesthetic drugs?
  • Is it a young adult or older animal?
  • Are there special measures in connection with the condition for which surgery / treatment should be taken into consideration?
  • Is it a painful surgery or not?
  • Is it a long or a short-term surgical procedure?

recovery Sugar House Veterinary Hospital incorporates various measures for anesthesia to ensure the safety of your pet by doing:

  • A careful examination of heart and lung function, blood circulation and general condition prior to the anesthesia of the animal.
  • Careful selection and administration of anesthesia on the basis of the above considerations.
  • Monitoring of heart and lung function with monitors during surgery.
  • Intensive supervision and control in the post operative recovery of your pet. Has the temperature returned to normal? Is any post operative bleeding under control? Is the animal quiet awake? Does the animal need additional pain relief?
  • We do not let you bring home animals that are still under the effects of anesthesia.

Extra precautions around anesthesia could be:

  • Blood tests including liver and renal function prior to the anesthetic. The liver and kidneys are important organs for the removal of the residual anesthetic from your pets system. This is true especially in older animals (> 8 years), this is why we recommend these blood test so that we can get an established base line of how your pets liver and renal function are before giving anesthesia and after so that we may further know what to expect and prepare for in the post operative recovery stage of your pet and to share this important information with you so that you will also be informed about the physical state of your pets condition.
  • We may give an IV Infusion to older animals to support their circulation.
Are you still a little anxious about anesthesia or do you have any questions? Please ask for more information from your veterinarian.
